Local Events

Bournemouth has a lot of regular events during the year always check on the AUBSU’s website www.aubsu.org.uk or Bournemouth Borough Councils website at www.Bournemouth.gov.uk

Arts By The Sea Festival

This multi-art form festival brings some of the most contemporary and experimental art to Bournemouth at the end of September and into October.  With national and international renowned artists exhibiting in ‘pop up’ locations around Bournemouth this is not want to be missed.

Bournemouth Air Festival /Bournemouth Wheels Festival

Held in August, the Bournemouth Air Festival offers one of the largest free air displays in the UK with various attractions all along the promenade and night time entertainment this is a must see.  The wheels festival is new to Bournemouth and everything running on wheels is on display during a weekend in May.  There are plenty of ‘James Bond’ type vehicles on display plus other entertainment during the day along the beach and promenade.

Fireworks and Illuminations

Each summer there are fantastic free firework displays every Friday night at Bournemouth Pier.  The illuminations are an 100 year old tradition where you can join in lighting candles that decorate the lower gardens to make shapes outlined in the darkness.

Summer Ball/Somerley Tea Party

These two end of year festivals are the perfect way to celebrate the end of your course and the start of summer.  Very different in their approach the Bournemouth University Summer Ball will showcase mainstream acts/music and has a fun, fancy dress approach to the event.
Somerley Tea Party is a quirky art house event, that focuses on the more marginal dance music, with art themed displays and interactions.

Cinemas, Art and Music

Bournemouth has an Odeon cinema in the new BH2 complex in the centre of town that shows all of the latest films.  If you fancy something a little more arthouse or retro, try the Lighthouse Arts Centre in Poole, Regent Cinema in Christchurch, or the Colosseum cinema in Westbourne, which is the smallest cinema in the UK.

The Gallery on the AUB campus exhibits both contemporary and experimental art from both well-known national artists to the AUB student end of year shows.
The Old School House, Lung Gallery and Factory Studios all have premises in Boscombe and exhibit regularly.
The Russell- Cotes Art Gallery/Museum is Bournemouth’s best known and oldest gallery, showcasing art and history in one premises.

There are a number of venues around the town that regularly showcase local circuit bands such as O’Neils, Cellar Bar, Mr Kyps, and The Old Fire Station.  For bigger more well-known acts 02 Academy Bournemouth and Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) are the first places to look.
