Alcohol-free Freshers'

There’s a stereotype that students only come to university to get drunk.

It’s kind of easy to understand why it’s such a stereotype when we’ve all read the news headlines and seen the viral videos of new students binge-drinking and stumbling out of nightclubs.

But more students are drinking less and less, and many don’t drink at all, and their reasons for doing so are as personal as the individual. Sadly, drink culture can be very damaging and isolating for those who don’t drink, and the assumption is often that if you’re not out drinking and clubbing, and if you don’t have a beer in your hand, then you’re not doing it right.

And that’s totally not true.

We wanted to create an inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere for all of our new students, and that means providing Freshers’ events where excessive drinking isn’t the focus. In fact, we’re proud to be one of the few SU’s in the country actively promoting an alcohol-free Freshers’ Fortnight

Bournemouth has many cool clubs and bars that you’ll get to explore of your own accord if that’s your kind of thing, and they’ll be putting on all sorts of club nights over the Freshers’ period that we simply can’t compete with.

For those of you who don’t drink (or for those of you who simply fancy something a bit more chilled), we’re ready and armed with a whole two weeks’ worth of activities that you won’t need a beer to get you through.

EVENTS WITH A CHANCE OF ALCOHOL

These events may feature alcohol, but they have been designed so that they can still be enjoyed without an alcoholic beverage, and the key focus is NOT on the consumption of alcohol. We have specifically chosen venues that have a more relaxed atmosphere than your average bar and have a whole section of non-alcoholic drinks on offer.

Wine & Cheese Night – a chill evening of jazz, cheese, and wine (there will be a small amount of wine present, as well as non-alcoholic options, however this event is designed to be very casual and relaxed so alcohol consumption is not the focus of the event)

Freshers’ BBQ – burgers at Bournemouth’s Brewhouse & Kitchen (this event is held at a bar/pub in Bournemouth so alcohol may be present, however alcohol consumption is not the focus of the event)

Freshers’ Quiz – a quiz in the Arts Bar, with the winning team winning the pool of money (this event is held in the Arts Bar, the on-campus bar, however it is a relaxed atmosphere and alcohol consumption is not the focus of the event)

Drink & Draw – enjoy a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic, hot or cold) and join us for a social drawing session (this event is held in the Arts Bar, the on-campus bar, however it is a relaxed atmosphere and alcohol consumption is not the focus of the event)

Open Mic Night – listen to some fresh student talent (this event is held in the Arts Bar, the on-campus bar, however it is a relaxed atmosphere and alcohol consumption is not the focus of the event)

Fancy Dress Party – dress up in your snazziest costumes and win prizes (this event takes place at a bar/pub in Bournemouth so alcohol may be present, however alcohol consumption is not the focus of the event)

Board Game Night – a chill night of board and card games (this event takes place at the on-campus bar so alcohol may be present, however alcohol consumption is not the focus of the event)
