Creating a safe and inclusive environment for queer people of ethnic minorities and different religions.
A bit about me
- I love dogs
- I'm from Egypt (yes where the pyramids are)
- I play guitar and drums
- I speak 3 languages: English, Arabic and French
- I watch Friends instead of doing my essays
- My sister is an Olympian, making me the 'disappointment child'
What I would do with this role
- Improve awareness of how people from various backgrounds, cultures, and religions experience queerness differently
- Provide a safe space to talk
- Organise weekly LGBT+ society meet-ups
- Organise events such as: DYMK bar socials, queer musical bingo night, pride parade around uni in June, and many more...
- Encourage students to share their ideas and feedback and do my best to implement them
Why am I doing this?
- I did not grow up in a positive LGBT+ friendly area, I was not surrounded by a community of people like me, and as a result grew up believing I was the only Arab Muslim girl to like girls.
- In fact, I didn't even know of the LGBT+ community until I was 14, because it was an extremely taboo subject that no one ever talked about.
- This is why I want to create visibility for those who are not frequently seen.
