It’s the start of a brand-new term here at AUB, and there’s plenty of things for you to get involved in whilst you’re settling back into campus life! To help make things a little clearer, we’ve highlighted a few of the events that’ll be happening across the month:
23rd September – 29th September
Looking to try a new club, society, or network? Taster Week is the perfect opportunity to do so! We’ve collaborated with lots of the different student-led groups that you can join in with, including: RAG, Climbing, Life Drawing, and Games Society. All the sessions this week are free and allow you to try out lots of different things without having to worry about making a commitment. For more information, see our event over on Facebook, or read our Taster Week post here.
23rd September – October 18th
We are all about empowering the student voice here at AUBSU, and one way we can help to do that is with the fantastic team of Executive Officers here at the Students’ Union. We currently have vacancies for the following roles: Communications, LGBT*, International, Mature & Postgraduate, and Student Trustees. Want to be part of the team? Simply nominate yourself through the website, have the support of a few of your friends, and then you’re good to go onto the next step of the process.
Nominations for positions will close on the 7th October at 5pm, and then students across AUB will be able to vote for you between the 14th– 18th October. It may sound scary - trust us, it’s worth it! Just be yourself, and you too could help be the voice of change across campus.
We know most days the small things feel just that - small and insignificant. But the small things are actually the important things; a hug between friends, that kind word to someone feeling down, enjoying the sunset after a bad day. The Small Things Matter campaign is all about supporting you, with tools, tips and a bunch of courage to take the next step for you, however small: every step you take is no step too small. Small steps have big impact.
This month we’ll be repotting some cacti (that you can take home!) and talking about transitions – we even have a fun little article that you can read to get some more information about transitions and settling into a new place.
Find the team in the courtyard from 12pm and come get involved. Want more information on the campaign? Did you know that you can now follow the official aubsu_matter Instagram account to get not only more information on what is happening across the year, but also some good vibes sent to your feed! For the first time ever, we also have a Journal of Small Things that you can purchase from the AUBSU office for just £1 – it’s designed to help you find some light in the darkest times, as well as keep track of your mental welfare when things get tough. It’s pretty handy if you ask us!
1st October - 31st October
On behalf of your Race Equalities Officer Louise, you are invited to celebrate diversity, inclusivity, and culture with AUBSU as part of Black History Month 2019. This year the lineup is BIGGER than ever, featuring events such as film screenings, workshops, open lectures, and the popular MAGIC club night! To keep track of everything that will be happening, be sure to follow @aubsu_race on Instagram!
Some of the events will require you to purchase tickets in advance at www.aubsu.co.uk/tickets , so please check below before attending an event.
Want to help raise some money for a good cause? Did you know one of the easiest ways that you can do that is by popping along to one of our RAG quiz nights and taking part. You can have up to 6 people on your team at once, and no sign-ups are needed. Quizzes will be happening at the start of each month, so just keep an eye on our social media feed for any changes or extra details. Starting time will be at 5pm, so just head to the Arts Bar!
Are you a budding entrepreneur looking for a space or opportunity to sell your work? Maybe you’ve made some cool fridge magnets, or want to sell some cool stuff in aid of course fundraising. Why not book a stall at our AUBSU Market Day? On the second Thursday of every month AUBSU takes over the main courtyard between 12 and 2pm and transforms it into a bustling mini market. Not only are there prints and cakes galore (all made by your talented fellow students) up for grabs, but we'll also be selling AUB merch to keep you all on brand, and you'll also be able to swap your unwanted clothes for snazzy new ones at our Green Team's Swap Shop.
Want to book a stall? Simply fill in the form on our Market Days page and tell us a little bit more about what you want to do, it’s that simple!
We're giving up two hours of our Sunday afternoon to help tackle pollution on the best stretch of sand in the UK (and AUB graduation-photo hotspot), Bournemouth Beach. Fancy joining us? This beach clean is part of Surfers Against Sewage's Great Autumn Clean!
Litter pickers, bin bags, and gloves will all be provided. All you need to bring is your lovely selves, some warm clothes (it may get cold), and sensible shoes. Please purchase a free ticket so we know to expect you: Click here to grab yours!
It's Halloween soon, so join us to pick your own pumpkin! We'll be off to a local farm to pick our own gourdy goodness! It's up to you if you want to carve it or cook it. Priority booking goes to our Green Team and remaining tickets will be released after. Coach leaves AUBSU Office promptly at 10am and will return to campus for 1pm.
Our RAG Team have organised a special Halloween Laser Tag night for you all in the name of raising money for charity (oh, and running around with lasers).
A ticket will get you 2 games of laser tag and a drink to help refresh you after all that zapping! Plus, it's Halloween so the venue will be extra spooky... y'know if a maze of adrenaline-filled AUB students wasn't terrifying enough for you.
Bonus: by buying a ticket, you'll be supporting a good cause! Click here to grab your ticket and secure your place!
We heard some of you beans like to play ping pong. Well, we have some exciting news for you! Play at our ongoing table tennis tournament SWERVE to represent a country and win prizes in our obviously very official AUBSU SWERVE World Cup 2019/20. Choose a country to represent (maximum of 2 only) and face off with other players! All welcome, whatever ability.
Entry costs just £2 per session, and because the tournament is spread across the whole year, you don’t have to worry about it taking up too much of your time either! Pretty cool huh? Details & tickets coming soon!
